topic Louisiana Tax Return with Federal qualified disaster loss in State tax filing

On my federal return, I am taking the standard deduction with a qualified disaster loss on top of the standard deduction for losses in a federally declared disaster. When trying to do my Louisiana state return, Turbo tax will not allow me to adjust my adjusted gross income for the "itemized deduction" on top of my standard deduction. The federal return says I used the standard deduction, which I did but there is no way to adjust for the disaster loss on the state return. It appears, the software is not allowing anything to be entered on Form IT-540 lines 8A and 8B because standard deduction is checked off from the federal return, but the standard deduction amount on the federal return is not the standard deduction amount. It seems like the state return should be flagging an error because of this, but it is not and does not allow the amount to be manually changed.

Check to see if Line 7, Federal Adjusted Gross Income, of Form IT-540 reflects the adjusted gross income (AGI) from your federal return. An unusual computation may be going on.

According to the instructions for Line 7 of your Louisiana return in Instructions for Form (IT-540):

If you have any exempt income or deductions other than what is reported on Line 8C or Line 9, you need to complete Schedule E to determine your Louisiana Adjusted Gross Income. In order to complete Schedule E, you may need to first compute your modified federal income tax deduction on Schedule H if you claimed federal disaster relief credits on your 2021 federal return. Mark an “X” in the box on Line 7 if the amount from Schedule E, Line 5C, is used.

[Bolding mine.]

Schedule E, which you can see with Form IT-540 included in the first link above, should take the disaster computation into account when computing Line 7.

Line 7 does equal my AGI from my federal return, but my taxable income is not calculating correctly. Line 8A is where I would need to put in my itemized deduction amount, but the system does not allow me to put anything on that line, because the system is indicating that I took the standard deduction.

I inputted a LA disaster and it is carrying on top of the standard deduction to line 8a. Since yours is not carrying and you are using the online version, there must be data stuck somewhere. Start with the state* return since it is the easiest to recreate. The worst case scenario would be to delete the casualty.*

For stuck information follow these steps:

Delete the form*, see How to Delete

Log out of your return and try one or more of the following:

Don't use Internet Explorer.

Clear cache and cookies,

Sign in using a different browser.

Sign in using a different device.

Log back into your return.

Enter the form again.
