Hello,

I have a couple of questions:

I live in Georgia and work remotely for a company located in Ohio. My W-2 states that they took out Ohio state tax, not Georgia. Do I need to file state taxes in both Georgia and Ohio?

What selection do I make for the question "Did either of you make money in any other state"? Does this only pertain to someone who lives in one state and works in another? It does not apply to someone who works remotely for a company in another state?

Thank you

Q. Do I need to file state taxes in both Georgia and Ohio?

A. Yes. But, you only file OH to get a refund. You do not owe OH state tax because you did not physically work there. Ask your employer to stop the OH withholding.

Q. "Did either of you make money in any other state"? Does this only pertain to someone who lives in one state and works in another?

A. Yes, normally. But you need to answer yes, to get TurboTax to generate the OH software.

Ohio does a convoluted tax calculation for non-residents/part year residents. It calculates tax on total income, then it calculates a non resident/part year resident credit, which it subtracts from the tax it calculated on the total income. The credit is calculated as your non-Ohio income divided by Total adjusted Income multiplied by the total tax. TurboTax (TT) does this by allocating your income as either Ohio or non-Ohio. W-2 income will be allocated by the state name abbreviation shown in box 15 of your W-2. TT will ask you, item by item, in the state section, how much of your other income is Ohio or non-Ohio income.

Also be advised that you will probably have to use a work around to get TT to prepare the OH return to get you your refund. At the w-2 screen split the boxes 15-20 W-2 info into 2 lines. On the 1st line leave OH in box 15 but make box 16 blank; leave the OH withholding in box 17. On the 2nd line put GA in box 15 and the state wages amount in box 16; leave box 17 blank..

If there is OH city withholding in box 19 of your W-2, you will have to file a separate city return to get a refund. Contact the city for forms.

For a list of all Ohio cities with an income tax go to

https://tax.ohio.gov/business/municipalities/08municipal-income-tax-forms

from there there’s links to each city's web site”

Thank you for the reply. I will try to get through the OH taxes, might ask for additional assistance.

Follow-up question: the same scenario where I live in Georgia and work remotely for a company in Missouri. On the W-2 it shows up that GA state taxes were collected. Do I need to file Missouri state taxes?

No, you do not need to file an MO tax return. Since you performed all your work in GA, the income is considered sourced in GA. Your employer correctly withheld GA taxes and not MO.
