Sending an amended return is not the remedy for your issue. It takes the IRS about four months to process an amended return. Sorry---but you will just have to be patient at a very busy time, and wait for the IRS.

I have been waiting a week for the IRS to verify my identification so I can update my banking info and get my refund issued. Why can't we file an amended return with the banking info and be done with this? I get that I need the new login in for many agencies but in the meantime my refund is held up. My husband unfortunately passed away last month and the money is needed sooner rather than later.

It takes the IRS 12 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return, so that would not be an option.

Go to this IRS website for the CP53E notice - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/understanding-your-cp53e-notice
