Hi all,

I already e-filed and scheduled my payments (what I owed) for Federal and State. I then realized that I forgot to include the estimated payments I had made for 2025. This would bring me from owing to getting a refund. Should I just wait to see if the IRS catches it or should I amend my return? I see that both my Federal and State have been accepted in Turbotax.

I assume the payments will go through as scheduled on tax day next week. but would I eventually end up getting refunded the payment + the refund?

Yes, I would wait and see what the IRS does. They usually catch that and add it in for you.

Hey,

So the full amounts of the automatic payments I had set up went through today. Should I file an amended return or give the IRS time to notice and fix the mistake?

Thanks again.

Don't amend. Wait for the IRS to send you a letter.

You might want to log into your account at the IRS and make sure they got your estimated payments and applied them to your account. Do you have proof they were made like bank statements?

I'm in the same position, and the IRS didn't notice and took the full amount out of my bank account. They also charged me a penalty, which I should be refunded. Curious why we shouldn't amend at this point, or did you mean not to amend prior to seeing whether the IRS would catch it? I'd rather not wait for something that may not happen for awhile, or at all. Thanks!

You will need to contact the IRS for information. It might be easiest to set up an account with them.

IRS Individual Online Account

Taxpayers with a Social Security number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number can create or access their IRS Individual Online Account to get information they need to file their return.

With an IRS Individual Online Account, people can:

View balance owed, payment history and schedule payments.

Cancel scheduled payments.

Get transcripts.

View or create payment plans.

See digital copies of some IRS notices.

View key data from their most recently filed tax return, including adjusted gross income.

Validate bank accounts and save multiple accounts, eliminating the need to re-enter bank account information every time they make a payment.

View, approve and electronically sign power of attorney and tax information authorizations from their tax professional.
