There may be one or more items of income on the actual tax return that don't appear on the personal income summary page. To verify the accuracy of the income reported on your Form 1040, you should look at each item listed there and trace the number back to the source documents. For instance, line one 1(a) lists your W-2 wages. You can look at your W-2 form to verify that the amount listed there is correct. Line 2(b) lists your interest income, you can verify that by looking at your 1099-INT forms. You can do similar exercises for the other income items listed on the Form 1040.

AGI higher than sum of “Personal Income” in TurboTax Desktop — capital gains mismatch with Schedule D?

I am trying to reconcile my AGI in TurboTax Home & Business Desktop (This is for 2024. I went to look for something else and spotted this issue.) and am seeing a mismatch between the “Personal Income” sections and Form 1040.

Context:

My original return only had W-2 income and investment income (no business/rental yet)

When I sum the items shown under Personal → Personal Income, the total is lower than the AGI reported on Form 1040

Investigation:

In Forms mode, I checked Form 1040 and noticed that Line 7 (capital gains) shows a different number than what I see in the Investment Income section

It appears that the UI is showing different totals than what flows into Schedule D / Form 1040

Questions:

Is the “Personal Income” tab expected to match AGI exactly, or are there items that are netted differently?

Could capital gains/losses be netted on Schedule D in a way that makes the UI totals not directly additive?

What is the best way to trace AGI back to source forms (e.g., 8949 → Schedule D → 1040)?

Is there any possibility of double counting (e.g., interest/dividends appearing in multiple sections), or is this purely a presentation issue?

I want to make sure my return is correct before proceeding with an amendment.

Personal income may not match adjusted gross income (AGI). For instance, non-taxable income would be included in personal Income but not in AGI. Non-taxable income can come from things like state bond interest or non-taxable social security benefits.

Capital gain income may be reduced by capital loss carryovers from previous years. So, the amount appearing on your form 1040, line 7(a) may differ from the amount reported on your Forms 1099-B. Also, you have to deduct investment losses from investment gains to arrive at net capital gains. Furthermore, all investment sales may not appear on Form 1099-B, they can also be reported on Form 1099-DIV and some may not be reported at all.

I'm not sure what you mean by "UI total directly additive." I would help if you could clarify that better, especially the meaning of "UI", as it normally means unearned income, but could also mean untaxed income.

Adjusted gross income is listed on line 11(a) on form 1040. You can see the sources of it from lines 1 to 10 listed on form 1040. You would have to trace backwards from the entries on Form 1040 to the source documents to verify the accuracy of the amounts on Form 1040 that make up AGI.

Thanks @ThomasM125 for the response and follow up question. By "UI" I meant the user interface (i.e. the Easy Step mode). When I do the total of everything that I see in the Personal Income page in the EasyStep mode let's say it comes to 100. Then when I check my form 1040 it shows a Higher value let's say 101. Since I do not have any rental or business income so I am expecting that my income in 1040 on line 11 must be equal or lower than the the some of all the items being displayed in the Personal Income page of the Personal (Tab). But in my case it is higher on line 11 of 1040. So, I am not sure where this additional income is coming from?

Please do not hesitate to ask for any more clarification if needed.
