Hi. I submitted my NY state tax return a while back and am scheduled to receive my refund tomorrow. Rounding, assume my refund was $1,000. After submitting the return, I realized that I omitted an adjustment that would give me an additional $90 on my refund. I used the amended return feature in Turbotax and it's showing a refund amount of $1,090. I'm just checking if that's the way it works and I will eventually get an additional refund of $90, or did I do something wrong?

Thanks.

Brian

Related to above.... when I choose file an amended return, the Federal refund amount resets to 0 (which I believe is correct) but the NY one does not. I'm not sure that I have a "clean" copy of my original return at this point, i.e., I have forms IT 201-X pages 1-6 included. I think TT already thinks the NY return was amended and I don't seem to be able to get it to reset. Thoughts? Thanks.

If you opened your return after filing and changed even one small number (perhaps to "see what would happen" or to test a deduction) before clicking the "Amend" button, TurboTax now thinks that "changed" version is your original. When you then start the amendment, it pulls those "in-progress" numbers into Column A.

If you are certain you didn't touch the file before amending, it's possible there were software updates after the time you filed and before you amended. The new calculation might retroactively apply to your "Original" column, causing a mismatch with what you actually e-filed months ago.

To fix this, go into Forms Mode, open the 1040X Worksheet, and manually correct the figures in Column A to match your original 'as-filed' return. This ensures the software calculates the 'Change' (Column B) correctly based on the 'Correct Amount' (Column C)."

How to amend my return?

Thank you for your answer.

You reference the 1040X worksheet but I am only amending my NY state return and it doesn't sow the A/B/C Columns on the form IT-201X pages.

Using actual numbers my "bad amended return" shows my original refund amount of $5806 on line 76 and 78 on IT-201X and the "new amount" of $5897 on line 80, when in fact it should be subtracting the $5806 from the $5897 and end up with a $91 additional refund.

I actually recreated the entire return from scratch and then amended it and my "new good amended return" shows the $91 refund BUT .. Turbo Tax says that I cannot file IT-201-X when IT-201 hasn't been efiled. It was efiled but not the return I edited. Is there a way to "trick" Turbotax into thinking I've efiled the return I am working on?

I actually had TurboTax support on the phone for an hour and then could not help.

It's not likely you can 'trick' TurboTax to e-file the amended New York State (NYS) return. It should be mailed to the following address:

No Payment Due / Refund Expected:

State Processing Center

PO Box 61000

Albany, NY 12261-0001

NYS IT201-XAmended Return Instructions
