topic amended 1099 DIV - state return in After you file

I received an amended 1099 DIV after I filed my Federal taxes and before receiving my refund. I understand I need to wait to amend my return until I see what the IRS does with my return.

My question is how to handle my state return. I am a resident of the District of Columbia which has had some confusion about what tax rules apply to District tax returns. So I did not file the DC return when I filed the Federal return. I am now ready to file my DC return. Should I include the additional income on my DC return in TurboTax, which will make my income on the DC return different than that in my Federal return? Or should I just use the info in the original 1099 and wait to see how the IRS deals with it?

Re: amended 1099 DIV - state return

My advice would be to file the DC return accurately, then if necessary, remove the 1099-DIV from your federal return before you start to amend it. When you amend the federal, there should be no change to the original DC return (no amendment needed). File the federal return through e-file when ready. Please review the information below..

Do not change your tax return until you read all the instructions (except as noted above in your case). TurboTax needs to know the original numbers and the corrected numbers to provide the correct end results before you prepare it.

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.

You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.

You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.

Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.

The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due

Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected.

You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

Amend a tax return for the current tax year

@eafarrell
