When you start an amended return, the tax calculator(s) reset to zero.

You still owe the amount due on your original e-file.

The tax calculator on Turbo Tax resets to zero when you start the amendment process.

The amount on your 1040X is either a refund (Line 22) or an amount due that has to be paid back to the IRS (Line 20).

The total amount of refund for your return is the original tax amount due plus the refund on your Form 1040X

You should still pay the amount due on your original e-file. The IRS already has your return and will be looking for the check. Also, wait until after you send the payment that is due on your original e-file before you mail your amended return.
