The date of death must be within the 2024 tax year (or early 2025 before the return is filed), which is likely why TurboTax is rejecting a 09/2025 date of death.

I'm filing 2024 taxes for my parents. My dad passed in September 2025. When I started the forms, I answered "yes" to the statement "This person died before filing this return." which is correct. But it seems that because the taxes are for 2024, it won't accept the 2025 date of death. What do I do?

You're going to have to print and mail the return anyway so just ignore the message and proceed.

HOWEVER, after you print out the return, make sure you write "deceased", the person's name and the date of death across the top of the 1040.

DECEASED: [Name of Decedent] - [Date of Death]

Sign the return as the personal representative and file Form 56 for good measure. Include your court appointment as personal rep (or letters) if applicable.
