I filed my 2025 tax return but did not properly identify when entering my 1095-A that i have a non-dependent listed on the form. My return was accepted with no error. My daughter turned 18 in July; she was covered Jan-June on our Healthcare Market Place insurance. Her tax return was rejected due to not having listed information reporting the 1095-A information and needing to file an 8962 form. Plan is for me to claim 100% for the time she was covered under the marketplace policy I paid for. Do I need to file an amended return for me to correct the fact the policy is shared with another taxpayer? Since her return was rejected, do I file an 8962 only for her? Both taxes were done with TurboTax.

If you included all of the 1095-A information on your return and it was accepted, you don't need to amend it.

If a child is not a dependent but was on the parent's policy, a shared policy allocation is required, where the child files Form 8962 to allocate 0% of the premium tax credit to themselves. Since your daughter's return was rejected, it needs to be corrected (not the same as an amendment; it's just to clear the e-filing error).

You could share a Marketplace policy with any of the following people who are not on your taxes:

Someone with whom you share custody of a child

A former spouse

A person who now claims your child as a dependent on their taxes

A person you used to live and file taxes with

A parent or an adult child

Please see this help article for information regarding how the non-dependent child should complete the Form 8962 on their own tax return so that they do not allocate any premium tax credit to themselves.

Sorry for jumping in. My son and I are in the same boat. My son was covered only for Jan. Starting Feb I got him out of the insurance since he started working and got his own insurance from work outside of marketplace. Now I have got a 1095-A which lists my wife and all my kids including him. The numbers for Jan are obviously higher than the rest of the months. I didn't have to pay any premium out of pocket. We plan on allocating 100% to me and 0% to him. How would his 8962 look like? Does he have to enter amounts for all the month rows or only for Jan when he enters 1095-A on his side? Last thing we want is either one of us to pay for the premiums.

In the situation you described, your son would need to indicate that he was only covered by Marketplace insurance for January. If he was a dependent on your return, he would not have to complete Form 1095-A information on his return.

See this TurboTax help article for more information.

@MonikaK1 Thanks for the response. Since he is not going to be a dependent on my return he is going to enter Jan as start and end months, 0% as his part, and he would enter only the values for the month of Jan. The rest of the months do not apply to him since he was not covered. If he enters those values, all those values show up in 8962 as full amounts and he won't be eligible for the premium tax credit because of his income.

I would do the same thing: Jan shared, 100%, but enter all the values for all the months.

Is my understanding correct?

Unfortunately, the example in the article you referenced assumes Darcy was covered for the whole year so it doesn't quite answer the question as to how much of the data needs to be entered by Darcy.

Yes, you will enter this exactly the same way as you indicate in your opening paragraph. The main thing is to leave the rows from Febuary-December blank and to report that his shared allocation is zero. You are correct in reporting his starting and ending months are in January.
