Return Rejected - Form 8283 must be attached

Hello,

I have Turbotax Premier Windows Desktop. I made noncash donations to the same Charity (goodwill). I have 5 different donation dates, none individually over 500, but all together totaling over 500.

I submitted my return and it was rejected with this error:

"If Schedule A (Form 1040), 'OtherThanByCashOrCheckAmt" is greater than 500, then Form 8283 must be attached. This Return Cannot be filed at this time due to a processing error that will be corrected on January 31st, 2026. On or after this date, open the rejected return, review it for errors, and resubmit the return for electronic filing."

When I open forms, I don't see an 8283. I do see inidivual "Contrib Wks (Goodwill...), and a charity contrib. When I try to open 8283, I do see an existing Form 8283, "Form 8283 (Form 8283, Copy 1). When I open this up, the form is blank.

FYI - as I was filling out my donation, I initially lumped them together, but then realized I should break them apart. When it was lumped it had asked me additional questions about purchase value. When I broke them a part this screen did not appear.

Questions:
1. Is this an error with TurboTax or IRS? Do I need 8283?

2. In theory, do I just need to wait for TurboTax to update their system?

Anything I'm missing?

It's an issue with TurboTax, and it's absolutely unacceptable. They openly knew about the issue, yet still allowed E-filing until they resolved the issue, which is apparently supposed to be tomorrow.

Nope. I've tried three different times today.

I also haven't seen the refund she promised get initiated…

I went through the entire process and verified that the form was added before resubmitting.

I e-filed at 8:02 AM and it was accepted at 8:24AM this morning.

How did you find the form? I r-submitted Saturday when Turbo Tax said it would be fixed, but it was rejected this morning.

This is now fixed but you will need to follow these steps to generate the form and/or fix your rejection:

Sign in to your TurboTax Online account and select Fix my return.
Select Federal from the left menu, then Deductions & Credits.
Scroll down to Charitable Donations and select Revisit next to Donations to Charity in 2025.
You must review each non-cash donation entry. For any donation or group of similar items over $500, ensure you have provided:
The organization's name and address.
A description of the property.
The date you acquired it and how (e.g., purchase, gift).
Your cost or basis and the Fair Market Value (FMV).
Once you provide these details, TurboTax will automatically generate Form 8283.

If the form still does not appear in your Tax Summary:

Go to Tax Tools > Tools > Delete a form.
Check if there is a "ghost" Form 8283 or Charitable Contribution Worksheet that is blank. Delete it.
Go back to the Donations section and re-enter the details for the specific high-value items. This forces the software to re-trigger the form creation.
Once corrected, proceed to the File section to resubmit your federal return.

Hi,

I bought and downloaded the desktop version of Home and business and I am fully up to date software, and it still won't created my 8283 I need for my state return. I tried deleting all my donations and re entering each with detailed information and it didn't work. Will this fix work for my version too?

Do you have Form 8283 in your Federal Return? Does your state also require the form, or just Schedule A from your Federal return? If you can give more details, we'll try to help.

A common TurboTax issue is a "ghost" entry—a $0 or stray character on the charitable contributions worksheet—which can be cleared in Forms Mode.

Hi,

Yes, I need it for my State Schedule A for KY due to a large non cash donation. I didn't have enough deduction for federal and it took the standard deduction. The form is in there, if I look it up, but it won't add the 8283 to my return. I tried printing it like some suggested to see if it included it, and it didn't. I have even tried starting a new return, this is horrible software this year.

TurboTax often does not automatically generate or attach federal Form 8283 to a state return if you are using the standard deduction on your federal return, even if you need it to itemize for Kentucky.

Try going into your Federal return after the Deductions section, and elect to use Itemized Deductions instead of Standard. See if this updates your KY return.

Not true it has every year till now, it is required by KY, but this time it isn't adding it on. I am not the only having these issues either. Thank you for the suggestions, only option I guess is to mail it in and print the 8283 separately, will not buy turbotax ever again.
