While the information below that I originally posted yesterday afternoon was correct through midnight October 31, 2025, as of November 1, it is no longer possible to efile a 2024 return, and it looks like 2024 Online TurboTax has already shut down for the season (at least for me.)

If your Online TurboTax has shut down after midnight October 31, and if you need to still work on your return, you'll have to use 2024 desktop software. If you've already paid for Online TurboTax, then TurboTax Support should furnish you the software. Log into Online TurboTax, and you'll probably get a message saying to download your *.tax2024 data file using the link it provides so you can open it in the desktop software.

Here's how to contact TurboTax Support, if needed to get a download of the software if you've already paid or need additional assistance.

Yes, if you haven't actually filed yet (i.e., haven't efiled or actually mailed a copy), and if you print a copy and notice an error, you can go back into the interview and correct something before actually filing. If you log in, and TurboTax thinks you were finished so the interview is closed, here's how to open it back up. On the Tax Home page look for a link "Add a State." That doesn't really add one, but opens the return interview back up.

Why are you filing by printing, signing, dating, and mailing a return instead of efiling? If you are having a problem when efiling, folks in this forum might be able to help you so you can efile. A paper return can take weeks to process. Did you try to efile, but got a rejection error code and message? If so, what is the rejection code and message?

If you DO decide to file by mail, remember to sign and date it. When mailing, it's recommended to use a method that has tracking. If you are getting a Federal refund, it will take about 4 weeks for a mailed return just to show up in the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool.

If you file the Federal return by printing and mailing, and if you also have a state return, the state return will also have to be filed by mail to the state tax agency.

But get it done ASAP...since the Online software will likely shut down for 2024 taxes sometime in November....could even be next week or two. After it shuts down for 2024, your file will be locked down for a week or so as all files are archived.....even unfinished ones, and those could only be continued using the desktop software.

(I do wonder when the actual shutdown/archiving date is expected to be this year)
