IP Pin problem. The IP pin number is something you choose yourself as a password for the IRS to give you phone information as to the status of your return. The IRS has a separate Pin they issue each year in January. You need to actually update this pin number with Turbo tax before you start the E-file process. Find the tab in under the Federal or Personal tab that says "Other Tax Situations". Scroll down to "Other Return Information" and select Identity Protection Pin and choose UPdate. You will answer that you received a pin. They will bring up your last year's pin so you will EDIT and put the new SIX-DIGIT IRS pin for this year there. The pin for your IRS 6 digit code is on your IRS online account under "PROFILE". Scroll down the left side for the Pin information. You have the option of applying for one (takes seconds not days) or seeing the number they issued you for that year. Copy that number. Do it for both parties if you are married filing jointly. Then submit your return and keep your existing personal 5 digit pin the way it was.

There have been numerous posts on this subject and I've read the replies without finding an answer that has worked. My wife has received an IP PIN in past years and our returns have always been accepted. Our 2022 return has been rejected twice despite the fact that I am entering the correct IP PIN for the 2022 Tax Year from the CP01A. I've double checked that the AGI is correct. Is this a turbotax issue or is it possible the IRS database is incorrect? Any other ideas what the issue could be.

You need a new IP PIN for her. An IP PIN is valid for one calendar year. A new IP PIN is generated each year for your account. Logging back into the Get an IP PIN tool, will display your current IP PIN. An IP PIN must be used when filing any federal tax returns during the year including prior year returns.

If you cannot find the IP PIN for the Return year you are working on, leave it blank. The IP PIN are meant for the assigned year only and the IRS will not replace it. So leave that space blank for the year you are working on.

Went to irs.gov, retrieved our IP PIN and it indicates, "your 2023 Identity Protection PIN." I tried it and the return was rejected via e-file. That makes me question if we're supposed to use the 2022 PIN for the 2022 tax year, so I tried that and it was rejected again. This is an annual headache and we end up mailing our return every year. Any thoughts?

The IP Pin will change each and every year. This is an Identity Protection Pin.

You can get an Identity Protection pin here, or if you lost your IP PIN, you can go here to Retrieve IP PIN.

Here's how you can fix a reject:

Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button. Follow any “fix it” instructions to update the information causing the rejection.

Note: Not all rejections will have explicit guides to fix the information. You’ll need to navigate to the program area to address the cause of the rejection.

Time-saving Tip: If what you originally entered is correct, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, a dependent that's already been claimed, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return. This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.

Not sure if this will help chi_johnson since this reply is around two months later, but in my case the problem was that I had a printout of an IP PIN issued by the IRS in October of 2024 that I thought was valid for 2024 taxes. It turns out between October, 2024 and April, 2025 they had issued a new IP PIN for me, without sending any notification. So, once I logged into my IRS account and discovered the new IP PIN they had issued, I was able to update that on my return and it was finally accepted.

Guessing maybe the IRS updates the IP PIN at the start of every calendar year?

Anyway, be sure to check your IP PIN on the IRS website with your login credentials to be 100% sure you are using the most current one. Hope this is useful to someone to save them the 3 hours of frustration I went through earlier today!
