2018 TurboTax updates

I am late filing my 2018 tax return. I purchased a new copy of TT Home & Business from Amazon. The software says "Your final forms are not ready." Says "select Get Final Forms to try to download them again." But I get error 42016. I cannot finish my return without these updates. I need your help. Thank you.

In 2025 you purchased and are now trying to install/use 2018 desktop software? Sorry---TurboTax is no longer providing support or updates for software earlier than 2021. You will not be able to use 2018 software. And...any refund for 2018 has been forfeited for several years. If you owe tax due for 2018 it is still owed with late filing penalties and interest.

You might want to seek local paid tax help to prepare a 2018 tax return. Or..there might be other tax software available for a 2018 return.

What about your returns for 2019 onward? Are you behind for all of them?

Each tax year has to be filed separately using the forms for the specific tax year. They cannot be combined in any way--do not even put them in the same envelope when you mail them. Software for past years is available back to 2021. Any earlier years can only be prepared on paper forms by hand--and those refunds have been forfeited now.

It might be better for you to seek local paid tax help in a situation when you are several years behind in filing your tax returns. Do you even have all of the documents you will need to enter and show your income—like your W-2’s and any 1099’s?

If you need to prepare a return for 2021, 2022, or 2023 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

And...just to add....it is pretty shocking that amazon is still selling 2018 software now since users will not be able to install or use it. Seek a refund from amazon for the useless software if you purchased it in 2025. Do not purchase TurboTax software for any year earlier than 2021. The 2021 software will not be supported much longer--only until mid-October of 2025, and then it will also go out of date. Unless you requested an extension for a 2021 return (in 2022) any 2021 refund has been forfeited.

Yeah....you can find all sorts of Old TurboTax software being offered on Amazon.

All those I have looked at are from Third parties who sell thru Amazon listings.

Only buy years offered by Amazon software services.

TurboTax sales&marketing staff really need to work with Amazon to eliminate these third party sales once TTX software goes out of date for any year TTX stops supporting.
