IF you filed and return is pending, please wait... if it is rejected, use steps below to change:

To change Overpayment option:

Log back in to your return (if not already there).

Click on Orange box 'Take me to my return' (if shown).

Click Federal Taxes tab.

Click Other Tax situations tab.

Select Apply Refund to next year and make your change.

Delete the amount of refund that is in the box to apply to next year's taxes.

IF the return is accepted:

You have plenty of time to reverse the situation.

First, wait about a week after you've received confirmation that your
e-filed return was accepted (or 2-3 weeks after mailing, if you
paper-filed).

Then, visit or call your local IRS office
(fastest) or call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to explain that you want
your applied refund transferred back to the current tax year.

You'll get your check refund in approximately 3-4 weeks. Electronic deposit is not available in these cases.

[Edited 4/05/17]

Hello, my return was electronically filed and accepted May 10. I inadvertently had my refund applied to next year's estimated taxes. I am doing research re having a refund issued now instead. I called the IRS and was told that the agent had never heard of having a credit changed to a refund check and was not able to assist me. My question is, should I do an amended tax return with Form 1040-X to change election to refund? Thank you for your assistance.

Just going over instructions for Form 1040-X, the language for line 23 reads, "You can't change your election to apply part or all of the overpayment on Line 21 to next year's estimated tax."

Thank you for the advice, however, I was still unable to speak with anyone. It put me on hold( no call back option) and told me a rep would be with me in 30-60 mins. After 47 minutes on hold, the BOT said we cant help you at this time and hung up. This was at 3:15pm PDT today - Monday.

Lastly, is there any way to change my refund from direct deposit to my bank, to credit to my 2024 return online? Also, I filed on 10-15-2024. How long do I have to contact them before they deposit it to my bank account?

I finally got to speak to someone after first waiting on hold for 47 minutes, only to have the BOT tell me they couldn't help at that time and then hanging up on me. When I called a second time, I sat on hold for just over 2 hours and then got someone who transferred me to the refund department. That person then spent about 15 minutes researching if it was possible to change a direct deposit refund to a check refund, which she then told me could not be done, at which point I reiterated that was not what I was requesting. I reiterated that I wanted a direct deposit refund from 2023 changed to a credit towards my 2024 1040 return. She then placed me back on hold for several minutes to return and tell me it can't be done. It appears once the return is filed, it is set in stone. If such is not the case, please advise.
