We completed our taxes using TurboTax and it let us claim our son who is in college living at home as a dependent even though he works full time. We thought that he is supposed to claim the 1099-Q and 1098-T forms on his taxes, so we did not enter those forms on our return. However, when we were helping him do his taxes, TurboTax said that this is supposed to be claimed on the return that claimed his as a dependent and it did not include any of it in his return. I assume now we have to file an amended return to include that on ours?

Yes, if you are qualified to claim your son as a dependent, you will have to amend your tax return to claim the education credits if you are qualified.

I don’t really care about any education “credits”, but there are earnings on the 1099-Q (which hopefully get canceled out by the Tuition Expenses on 1099-T. However, I still have to amend to make sure no taxes are owed, correct?

You only need to amend your return if you are able to (and wish to) claim education credits or if the qualified expenses (for purposes of the 1099-Q distribution) were less than the distribution and you need to report taxable income.

If you do not have any taxable income from the 1099-Q distribution it is not required to be reported on either return (and you wouldn't need to amend.)

Expenses were more, so I guess we will not need to do an amended form :-). Thank you everyone!
