I filed my 2024 taxes with TurboTax for federal, Missouri, and California. However, I made a mistake and successfully filed an amended return for federal and Missouri. My original California tax refund was $306. Since I already received the $306 refund, TurboTax should have shown a $20 balance due so I could file an amendment for California. Instead, it still shows a $286 refund and states that it has been filed. Could you please fix this issue in my account?

TurboTax does not have access to make any changes in your account with the IRS or any other tax agency. The program just facilitates e-filing the returns that you prepare using the software.

Did you already file the Schedule X and corrected Form 540? From your description, it sounds like TurboTax has correctly calculated that your California refund should be $286 instead of $306. That would be shown on your corrected Form 540. The Schedule X should show on Line 7 that you owe $20 if you already received the refund of $306. See the Instructions for Schedule X. You can pay online with Web Pay. Go to ftb.ca.gov/pay for more information.

If you are an individual filing an amended personal income tax return, use Schedule X to determine any additional amount you owe or refund due to you, and to provide reason(s) for amending.

Attach Schedule X to your completed amended tax returns:

Form 540, California Resident Income Tax Return,
Form 540NR, California Nonresident or Part-Year Resident Income Tax Return, or
Form 540 2EZ, California Resident Income Tax Return.

@MonikaK1 I originally submitted Form 540NR for California and received a refund of $306 in my bank account. Later, I realized I made a mistake and needed to amend my return.

I successfully e-filed my federal and Missouri amendments, but when trying to e-file my California amendment, TurboTax is not generating Schedule X correctly. It should show that I owe $20 (since I already received $306), but instead, it only shows $286 on Form 540NR and indicates that my return has already been filed.

I’ve tried multiple times, but I can't get Schedule X to generate properly. How can I generate Schedule X reflects the correct amount and successfully e-file my California amendment?
