Please explain how you "fixed" his return. The 1040X needed to amend a return is not yet available. So if you went in to the return and made changes, you just messed the return up without following the correct process to amend.

If you e-filed the original return and it was accepted, you have to wait for the return to be fully processed. Then you can use a Form 1040X to amend the return and pay any additional tax due. If you made any changes without using a 1040X, then restore the return to the way it looked when it was originally e-filed. (Any changes you made after the return was e-filed went nowhere. ) In order to amend, you have to be able to work from the return exactly as it looked when it was e-filed.

Then wait. After the return has been processed, you can amend correctly.

The taxes got rejected right away because we forgot to select he can be claimed as a dependent on mine and dad’s taxes. So we “fixed” them, and then resubmitted them. They were approved but in doing that it says he owes more to state, but never let us pay for the additional peeling the second time.

I was wondering when and how we pay for the additional amount owed to the state.

You do not mention how you were paying the state tax due for the return as originally filed. Did he owe state tax before you fixed the rejected return?

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment. For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

I’m sorry. He owed $222 when we first filed. We paid by card, but then the taxes were rejected due to not putting him down as someone who can be claimed as a dependent on another tax return.
We went in and fixed the one error and in doing that it stated he owed another amount extra $471. When we reviewed before re-filing there was no where ti put his payment in again. Will they just charge the same debit card for the whole amount owed to the state? They have been accepted through both federal and state.

the original $222 hasn’t even come out of his account yet, so I’m assuming they will just charge the full amount owed at one time once processed?

What state is this? Did you change anything else besides the answer in MY INFO about whether he could be claimed as a dependent? Without any personal information, please provide some details about his income and what was shown in boxes 16 and 17 of his W-2's.

We are in Oregon. No we did not! Nothing was changed besides the dependent box selected in the MY INFO section.

I don’t have his return in front of me. I will update in a minute with those boxes.

he owes more of a return to the state. We already processed his $222 (owing). Paid by debit card. As soon as we selected he can be claimed as a dependent on another return his state owing jumped to $471. It never asked us to “pay again” for the additional amount. The $222 hasn’t processed out of his bank account yet, so will they just charge the whole amount (the new state owing amount) when his return processes?

I just need to know when and how we pay the state for his taxes he owes!

It simply does not make sense for your son's state tax due to become more than double the original amount shown just because you changed his return to say he can be claimed as a dependent---so something else happened. You need customer support to sort out the issue.

If your previously rejected Oregon state return for your son has now been accepted, with the instructions to pay the balance due by debit card, the payment should be processed.

Check the bank account for the debit to appear. If it is debited the original amount instead of the corrected amount, you don't have to wait for Oregon to send a bill - you can pay the remaining balance directly to the Oregon Department of Revenue. See instructions here. You can either pay by phone or online.

Oregon offers a credit for personal or dependent exemptions. For 2024, the credit is $249 for each qualifying personal exemption. You are allowed one personal exemption credit for yourself if no one else can claim you as a dependent.

If someone else can claim you as a dependent, you can’t claim an exemption for yourself. This is true even if the other person doesn’t claim you (or your spouse) as a dependent. See Oregon Publication 17 for more information.

Therefore, changing your son's Oregon return to reflect that someone else can claim him could have increased his tax by $249.

@Courtneypangborn13
