No, you are not missing something. The IRS is just as human (contrary to popular opinion) as the rest of us.

However, I don't know of this is a case of someone misreading a document and mistyping a number or a case of a data file being improperly created so the IRS computer imported the sale and got it wrong.

No matter. You must respond by the due date in the letter, but otherwise, this is not a big deal. These kinds of letters get sent out all the time.

Just reply to the IRS, make it clear that the IRS data is in error, and then show them why using those - and other - images.

The IRS is really not demanding money yet, but just a response, so give them a well-documented response. Give them a chance to correct the problem on their end.

NOTE: if there is a IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center near you, if face to face feels better, make an appointment and go show someone your documentation.

Error on CP2000A?

So confused... Got CP2000A where it states that I incorrectly reported proceeds from stock sales. IRS says I reported $5527 in sales for a stock X, but they got info from a third party that I got $5550, so I actually had $23 in additional income and taxes are due (this is just one example with tiny difference, but there were 7 other inconsistencies with larger claimed differences).

I went into my 8949 form and I actually reported correctly $5550 in proceeds and $5527 was cost basis. Checked Etrade and the numbers are correct. My 8949 form is correct, but somehow IRS is claiming I said $5527 were my proceeds while it clearly shows I stated $5550. Somehow someone or something is pulling numbers from a wrong column...

Of course I will send a letter pointing all this out, but I feel like that maybe I am missing something? Just feels so bizarre!! Am I not seeing something or is IRS? Any thoughts?

I added a picture showing actual numbers for one line.

Thank you! Yeah, to me looks like a human error as well. Or data being fed incorrectly! Just saw bizzare that I thought maybe I am missing something obvious. I thought at first I mis typed numbers in wrong columns, but triple checked and no, my numbers were inputted correctly. Will respond to them!

Thank you
