I removed my sister a dependent but when I submitted it still showed her! She is finally able to submit her own taxes this year- how can I fix this??

It is simply not clear to us what you did. If you e-filed with your sister shown as a dependent and then tried to change it after you e-filed, that change did not go through. When did you make the change?

If your return that claims your sister as a dependent is accepted by the IRS, then she will have to file her own return by mail; she will not be able to e-file. And then after your own return that claimed her is fully processed, you will have to file an amended return.

But until you know if your e-file is accepted or rejected, there is nothing you can do. Wait for the email that tells you if your return was accepted or rejected. The IRS starts to accept e-files on January 29.

I had removed her before I filed but it still shows her after I filed.

That makes no sense. If you deleted a dependent correctly before you filed, the dependent would not be shown on your tax return at all. Sorry----you are just going to have to wait for the IRS and see if the e-file is accepted or rejected. If it is rejected, you can delete the dependent in MY INFO. If the IRS accepts your e-file with your sister shown as your dependent, refer back to the information given to you earlier. Sister will have to file by mail, and you will have to amend.

What ended up happening? My gf decided I should claim my daughter this year, she deleted her info but her state still shows her on there, now I can't file

If you are a non-married couple who live together with your child, then only one of you can claim the child(ren) and the one not claiming the child does not enter anything at all on their tax return about the child. The “sharing” of child-related credits you may have heard about is only possible between divorced or never married parents who live apart and share custody and who have a written agreement to share the credits. The child’s SSN can only be entered on one tax return. Any other return with the child’s SSN on it will be rejected. If you are a family, then work out how to share the refund between yourselves.

If your GF made a mistake and entered the child's SSN on her return, that will block you from e-filing your own return that claims the child. GF has to amend and delete the child from federal and state, but you do not have to wait for her to do that. Print, sign and mail your tax return.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Ty! We decided I'd claim my daughter and her my son this year (never married). when I deleted daughter from mother's taxes (federal) I guess I assumed that state would re populate new info. It did not. So her return has our son as a dependent (federal) but my daughters info still shows on her state as a dependent. Couldn't fix thru TurboTax. Their returns are now amended and accepted, mines rejected. So I sent them physical copies. Wish me luck
