Did you already e-file? If you did NOT e-file you can go to the FILE section and change how you want to receive your refund. If you want direct deposit you need the routing number and your own account number.

You cannot change banking information while your return is in pending, nor can you change it after the return is accepted. The IRS does not allow it.

If you e-filed:

Banking information for direct deposit is wrong or closed

If you entered incorrect banking information for your refund, you can change it if your return is rejected. If it is accepted, however, it is too late to change it. The bank will reject the refund and send it back to the IRS. Then the IRS will issue a paper check and mail it to the address you put on your tax return. Expect a delay of at least a couple of weeks to receive your refund.

Bank information is entered in the File section of the program when you have a tax refund or taxes owed.

If you have not filed the 2024 tax return then you can change the bank info in the File section.

If you have filed the tax return, the bank information cannot be changed.

You will have to wait for the IRS to either Accept or Reject your filed federal tax return.
If the return is rejected you can make the necessary changes and e-file again.

If the return is accepted and the bank information is incorrect, then when the refund or taxes owed is sent to the bank it will be rejected. If a refund the IRS will mail you a refund check to the address on your tax return.

If taxes owed, and you selected direct debit from your bank account, you can cancel the payment and pay the taxes owed on the IRS website.

Once your return is accepted, information pertaining to your payment, such as account information, payment date, or amount, cannot be changed. If changes are needed, the only option is to cancel the payment and choose another payment method.
Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.

The option is not there to change account information. It just has where you can click to verify correct banking info. If not clicked, you can't most forward. HELP!

UPDATE FEB27: Due to the website update, the ending process inwhich you actually file- is a little different that years prior. The page that gives you options to upgrade which package you use, and also shows you your previously used account information - WILL NOT- provide the option to change/correct banking info. It definitely phsychs you out to seem like you will be forced to use the incorrect bank info. However, fear not! Continue on and the very NEXT PAGE is where you can update your direct deposit info, if needed.

Hope this helps someone else! Cause I was terrified to continue on thinking my refund would be going to the wrong account.

If you are trying to change your bank account information on a tax return that you have already filed then you can't do that. The information has already been sent to the IRS.

If you are trying to change your bank account information BEFORE you file your return then just go back through the tax return all the way till the checkout and enter new bank account information into the section for where you want your refund delivered.

There's no option. I go back to the FILE section and say pay with refund. Then it gives you options how you want your return. I select Direct Deposit. It then shows you two check boxes: "I'd like Intuit to save check info..." and "This account information is correct and this is where I want my refund sent to"

I don't check it because it's not correct. It's an old bank from last year, but then when I try to continue it says "Please Confirm"

The only options I have is to hide and unhide the Routing and Account numbers. That's it. I went through the entire filing and nothing anywhere asks for my routing number. I wouldn't have put last years. I check my actual account settings on the platform because it must be saved somewhere since it's pulling from last year and nothing. I went through my Preferences, Products, Payments and Billing -- nothing. The help describes everything you just said, but there's no popup that will let me enter the new routing number.

If you continue from that page, it will allow you to update your bank information on the next screen.

THANK YOU! This is a completely unclear step and there is no explanation in any official TurboTax documentation about this. There should be a note saying you can still update it in the next step. Bad design.

If you've already filed your return, you can't change your bank info. If not, in the FILE section select 'Direct Deposit' and the next screen may display the same bank as last year, or blank entry boxes. You can change or add your bank info on that screen.

Changes to your bank information can only be made before the return is filed and accepted.

If your return is pending or accepted, you cannot change your bank information. If your information is incorrect, your bank will reject the deposit, and the IRS will mail you a paper check, which may cause delays.

If the IRS rejects your return, you can update the banking information before re-filing.

To change your bank information in TurboTax before filing, or if rejected by the IRS you can:

Go to the File section,
Select Start/Revisit
See all options
Your refund/payment info," choose Direct Deposit, and
Enter your new bank information

If you have not filed your return, you can change you direct deposit info by following these steps:

Go to File.
Select Start or Revisit next to Step 2 Your refund info.
Select Other refund options on the Get your refund up to 5 days early screen.
Choose Direct deposit and Continue.
Enter your bank account info and Continue.
Your federal refund is now set up for direct deposit.

If you've already filed and your return has been accepted (or mailed), it's too late to change your bank account for direct deposit.
