Did you forget how to access your account?

Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them. Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax? If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

OR---- were you trying to ask about a 2023 return that you started in 2024 and did not file last year?

You will be able to access the 2023 return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it. But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.

Start a 2024 return online and enter some personal information so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2023 returns is now permanently closed.

Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2023 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac (not to a mobile device).Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late. If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe. Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Did you get the Desktop program CD or Download installed and activated with the 16 digit License Code? The Desktop program is blue across the top and the menu items like Federal, State, Review, File go across the top.

When you filled out your return did you go online and log in? And see a black column on the left side with the menu items, Federal, State, File etc. That is Online.

And are you asking about the current 2024 return or the 2023 return you did last year in 2024?

We see people get confused and they keep logging in to online software which will require them to pay at the end. You need to use the desktop software. One way to tell if you are using the right software---your tool bar. Online software has the toolbar in a black vertical column on the left side of the screen. Desktop software has the tools up on the top of your TT screen.

Did you purchase the download and stray into the online software by mistake?

If you are using online, you are using the wrong program. You need to switch to the desktop software to get what you paid for. You have to download it, update it and open it up from your own hard drive to use it.
