Ugh I wish I knew that. I had an error in my tax withholding amount and everyone told me to amend or else I could end up in an audit. I didn’t want it to seem like I did it on purpose.

It shows what my original refund was like you stated but on the cover sheet of my amend it shows that I owe. Hopefully they look at both because I haven’t gotten the original back either. :(

thanks for your help!

Amended Return

I have not been able to get an answer from the IRS and I was hoping you could let me know how this works. My first refund showed I would get the amount of $5,539. Then I found an error and amended it showing I would then get $3,575. Now the system is confused and acting as if I already for the $5,539 and showing I owe the difference between the 2 and resulting in no refund. Is this something that would be corrected when reviewed?

You should always wait to amend until you get the first refund. Have you filed the amended return yet? You should still get the first $5,539. What are you amending for? Maybe the IRS will catch it and adjust your return for you. So wait to file the amended return.

Then the amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe. I think the cover sheet shows what the original return WOULD have been if you did it right the first time.

Go by the actual 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16. If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

If you have a tax due, do not send the 1040V. Just include a check with the 1040X. Ignore the 1040V. That is for the original return or what the original return would have been if it didn’t need correcting. Don’t pay the amount on the 1040V. Pay the amount on the actual 1040X line 20.

Or You can pay the IRS directly at
