I am trying to file an amended 2023 tax return because I received an additional 1099. When I bring up the old return it shows the correct old refund, but when I amend it, it puts incorrect AGI and incorrect overpayment in Column A. Why is this happening? and how do I correct it? The 1040-X produced by TurboTax is NOT correct and cannot be used.

Yes, that can happen if you make any changes to the return before indicating that you need to amend it.

If you saved the original return before starting your amendment, you can just work with a copy of that.

If not, you can fix this by cancelling the amendment and deleting the 1099 that you added. Once the original return is restored, you can start again.

Here's how to restore your return TurboTax Home & Business Desktop:

Open your return.

Select the Forms icon in the upper right corner.

Highlight Form 1040X on the list on the left.

Select Delete in the lower left corner of the reading pane.

Confirm that you want to delete the 1040X.

Repeat with the 1099 that you added.

Now, verify that the return matches what you filed originally. Once it matches, save a copy and start again:

Open your TurboTax software.

Select Amend a Filed Return.

Select Amend for the return you need to amend.

If the return you need to amend doesn’t appear as an option, select Find a Tax File to find and load the return.

On the We’ll help you change (amend) your return screen, select Continue.

Select Yes, I’ve already filed my return.

Choose the option that best applies when asked Tell us a little more about your amend situation and Continue.

On the next screen, select Update next to the info you need to change.

Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return.

Don’t forget to select Save As (or Duplicate on Mac) from the File menu when you save a copy of your amended return. This will preserve the tax return you originally filed.

Give the file a different name from the original, like 2023_amended_tax_return_Smith
