topic can't access a prior(unfiled) tax return in After you file

For 2022 tax year, I was missing a W2, so I did not file the return. Now, I have the missing W2 that I needed, but can no longer access the return that I had started. In retrospect, I should have filed it anyway and then amended the return, but I did not know that I wouldn't be able to get back into it. I thought that when I logged back in, the unfinished return would still be there & I could pick up where I left off. Please help!

You will be able to access the 2022 return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it. But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.

Start a 2023 return online and enter some personal information so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2022 returns is now permanently closed.

Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2022 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2559403-how-do-i-finish-a-prior-year-return-that-i-started-in-turbotax-online

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

They are available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Mon-Fri

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899263-what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late. If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe. Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

How to finish a return you started online,

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-finish-a-prior-year-return-that-i-...

you will have to print and mail your returns. So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them. You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places. Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

Then when you file for 2023 you need to enter 0 for the 2022 AGI since you are filing 2022 late.

Thank you. Can you please elaborate on why you have to enter 0 for AGI on the 2023 return? How does that affect things?

You need to enter the 2022 AGI to verify your identity on your 2023 return. If you filed 2022 late or not at all you should enter 0 for the 2022 AGI. It doesn't affect your actual 2023 return or entries. It's just so the IRS knows it's really from you.
