Pending State return (CA)

I filed on the 1/23, and my federal return has been accepted as usual, but my CA state tax return is still pending. I know CA Tax Board starts accepting returns on Jan 2, I then called the CA Tax board, and they stated my 2023 tax return has not been received yet. They told me to confirm it with TurboTax, which I did, and the representative didn’t have any idea why and suggested that I can only wait since it's "Pending". I’ve never waited this long for TurboTax to submit my return to the state. I've read that TurboTax doesn't actually send it out directly to the Tax Board but had third-party agencies do it for them. CA Tax Board confirms with me that they don't pull anything out from Turbo Tax server, they just receive them according from whoever sends in the returns. Does anyone have any idea on how to resolve this? Thank you.

I am in the same situation. Filed Federal and CA taxes 1/13/24. Federal was accepted and my refund has been approved. My CA filing status still says pending. Hoping it gets resolved soon or someone has an answer on the next best actio. To take to get it sent and accepted to FTB.

The IRS doesn't officially begin accepting returns until Jan 29, 2024 and none of the states accept returns before that. You must have been a part of the testing batch for yours to have gone through already.

I personally know some of my coworkers and friends who have had both of their federal and state returns accepted. They even filed earlier than I do. I'm just not sure if they use TurboTax or other software to file, but if that is the case. TurboTax is really falling behind compared to other tax software.

@jdmtuan There have been some small "test batches" of federal returns accepted early by the IRS. A state return cannot be accepted until the IRS accepts a federal return. If a federal return was in one of those test batches, then it was possible for the state to accept the state return.

Otherwise....if your return was filed early and you are not in one of those test batches ---which are totally random---your returns are sitting on the server with all the other early ones---waiting for the IRS to open and begin to accept/reject returns on January 29.

@xmasbaby0 Thank you for your reply. So you're saying my federal return is included in the "test batch" of IRS and accepted, but not lucky enough to be received by the state yet, even though my return is technically eligible to be reviewed since the IRS already accepted it?

Some states are not even accepting returns yet. It depends on the state. Sorry---you will just have to keep waiting.

You are incorrect. State of CA FTB has already accepted returns beginning Jan 2nd. I also filed on 1/22 and my Federal return was accepted while state is still pending. This a bit maddening and needs to be resolved ASAP. This will frustrate a lot of people.

This is the same for me filed federal and state 01/19/24 and federal accepted 01/23/24 but California state still pending. What the hell is going on. Never using turbo tax again if this doesn’t get resolved

My state tax return is still pending but my federal was accepted i hope they start accepting soon. I never had this problem before and i use turbotax every year. I also feel as though i may not use it again due to this being a problem smh

I am in the situation. My federal was accepted on the 22nd but my California state is still pending. I guess we will have too wait until the 29th maybe.

I'm one of those in Pending Return CA, but at least I feel better knowing I'm not alone. I'll be hoping the State starts accepting them after the 29th.

I am in the same situation. I filed both my Federal and state(CALIFORNIA) on 1/23/24. My Federal had been accepted however, my state is pending. The state began accepting returns on 1/2/24. I’ve used Turbo Tqx for many. Years and I’ve never experienced this issue before. It’s very frustrating. Someone needs to provide a resolution.

I filed both my federal and state on 01/23/24. Federal was accepted the following day however my state is still showing pending. Could someone please direct me to whom I need to speak with to correct this. Maybe the first and last time I file with TurboTax

The IRS officially opened for E-filing today. It may take a bit for your state to accept your return.
