Hi Greetings, I was able to successfully e-file 2021 amended return, but am having trouble e-filing 2020 amendment. While turbo tax 2020 desktop version says "New as of August 2020! You may be eligible to electronically file your amended return. If you'd like to file electronically , click on the "File" tab to proceed.

Now I do not see any e-file option in File tab. How can I file my 1040-X for 2020 electronically. Note that I was able to attempt to e-file once in turbo tax online for 2020 but it was rejected due to some clerical error ( as how I understood). So I am thinking the option is there but hiding somewhere. Sending a paper return, I will never have proof of submitting the return. Note that I filed 2021 amended return successfully

Is there any one that can help?

Send it by certified mail with a return receipt. That is your proof that you submitted it.

Note that the Taxpayer Advocate recently reported that as of April the IRS processing time for amended returns was about 7 months. The processing time is the same whether it's e-filed or mailed.

So did you mail your original 2020 return? You can only efile if the original return was successfully efiled and Accepted.

I purchased Turbo tax Premier software in 2020 (and also once more in 2021). I filed my original 2020's 1040 online using Turbo tax online using my Premier Purchase and also the original was filed/accepted electronically. That is the reason I was thinking I SHOULD be able to file my 1040-X amendment as well electronically.

Note the word "MAY" be able to efile ... there are limitations. So if the program is not allowing it then your only option will be to mail it in.

Professional tax software can file prior year’s returns and amendments, but not all DIY software allows it.

Did you receive a confirmation of receipt of the amended one you filed?

Yes, for the 2021 amendment that I filed electronically through Turbo tax online, after filing, I got an email that is was accepted by IRS. I also looked up amendment status in IRS website for the status of my1040-X of 2021. It clearly said, the return is accepted and the return is in process. Thanks for asking.

The reason I started this thread was because Turbo allowed me to attempt e-file of 1040-X for 2020 as well once but unfortunately due to some clerical error IRS rejected it. After that the option mysteriously disappeared, and it told me to try thro desktop version. There is no e-file option in desktop version. One of the reasons I buy Turbo premier software is assuming a continuous e-file support which is missing for 1040-X for year 2020.
