Help! Two days ago I e-filed my return (federal and two states IA and NE). I am a NE resident but have farm rental income from IA. Returns were accepted. Today I received a revised 1099-B from one of my investment firms. They made a correction and issued a 1099-B to my overall 1099 (Misc, D, I etc) for this one account. It was triggered by one stock transaction in which I told a stock for a loss. The loss significant enough to result in a tax refund. The original 1099 did not have a 1099-B as this was the only stock sale transaction. This new 1099-B is the only change to what I originally filed.

What do I do now? How to I file an amended return? Do I open the original TT tax return that I already e-filed? Do a download the one account from my brokerage (I had numerous accounts from this same brokerage along with other brokerages on my original return? Or do I manually enter just the new 1099-B info for this one brokerage account. I have no idea how to start an amended return? Can I hold this and adjust for the stock loss next year? I use the desktop version of TT Advantage Premier for MAC

Someone said I should wait 20 days to file an amended return?

Thanks so much for your help.

Gary

If you want to change or correct some info on your tax return after you've filed it, you will need to amend your return.

Before filing an amended return, make sure the IRS has already processed the tax return you need to amend. That way, it will be less likely that the IRS will get your original return and amended return mixed up. If you've already received your tax refund, then you know the IRS has already processed your return. Don't amend your return until you know that the IRS has processed your already filed return.

Here are some things to know before you begin:

You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

Make sure you really need to amend

Wait until your return has been accepted (or mailed if paper-filing)

Use the same TurboTax account you used to file your original return

Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return. Only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending. The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due

Any changes you make to amend your federal return will automatically be transferred over to your state return

Select your product below and follow the instructions.

Sign in to TurboTax

On the home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select the year you want to amend

Select Amend (change) return, then Amend using TurboTax Online

If you're told to amend your return via TurboTax Desktop, follow the steps for TurboTax CD/Download below instead

On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your amended return, select the reason(s) you're amending and Continue

When you reach Here's the info for your amended federal return, select Start next to the info you need to change

Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return

Open the TurboTax CD/Download software for the year you're amending:

For example, you must amend your 2022 return in the 2022 version of TurboTax

Under Need to File an Amended Return?, select Amend a Filed Return

The 2019 version of TurboTax may say Amend a return (make changes) after it was filed and accepted by the IRS instead

Select Amend for the return you need to amend

On the We’ll help you change (amend) your return screen, select Continue

Select Yes, I’ve already filed my return

Choose the option that best applies when asked Tell us a little more about your amend situation and Continue

On the next screen, select Update next to the info you need to change

Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return

Don’t forget to select Save As (or Duplicate on Mac) from the File menu when you save a copy of your amended return. This will preserve the tax return you originally filed

Give the file a different name from the original, like 2022_amended_tax_return_Smith
