I need to amend my 2021 return that was originally filed using TurboTax and I'm getting a message saying that the federal and NJ state return have to be printed and mailed. Why is this happening? I thought that year 2021 amended returns were still eligible for e-filing?

E-filing of any 2021 tax return was discontinued by TurboTax after October 2022. A 2021 amended tax return using TurboTax can now only be printed and mailed.

The Intuit Professional software can e-file 2021 amended tax returns but not the TurboTax personal editions.

Oh I see, didn't know that! What would y'all recommend then - should I print and mail or should I go to a preparer and ask them to e-file? They will charge me for it, but I wonder if there are any advantages at all? I have a small underpayment, so am not expecting any money back if that matters, but I wonder if filing the amendment by mail carries a higher risk of penalties or audit?

according to IRS, e-Filed and paper 1040-X are both handled the same way.

how to file.

Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because the Form 1040-X reflects any changes there and becomes your new tax return.

Include any new/corrected document only if it shows federal tax withheld, and include in order only those Sequence Numbered tax forms and Schedules that changed or were added due to your amendment.
Attachment Sequence Number is on all the forms and Schedules that come after 1040.

If any forms specify an attachment, put all those attachments at the end in the same order as the forms they go with.

---
If you are using TurboTax you have to do this by visual comparison. The program won't break out those pages for you.
----
Mail to the address shown for your location in the most recent Instructions for Form 1040-X.
