My amount was changed

I filed last month (February) and a couple weeks ago now. The irs is stating that they changed my refund about to $0.00 because something in the paperwork wasn’t right but yet won’t let me fix the problem! I haven’t even received any letter or letters as to why or even as to why I can’t change anything to fix the problem! #Overwhelmed

The IRS will send a letter to the address on the return stating what they have done and why. Once you receive the letter, you will be able to form a game plan. We are here to help! Your replies need to be prompt and accurate so be ready for action once you get the letter.

How much was your refund?

The 2 most common reasons this year is you entered the wrong amount on line 30 for the Recovery Rebate Credit (3rd Stimulus payment) or line 28 for the Child Tax Credit. Those lines are just if you didn't already get the full amount or qualify for more. The IRS knows what they already sent you.

A lot of people answered the questions wrong and tried to claim the credits again. Double check your bank statements to see what the IRS sent you during the year for the 3rd Stimulus payment.

Did the IRS change your refund by the amount of the third stimulus payment? The IRS will be sending you a communication in the next 2-3 weeks but it it not always helpful in explaining why your refund was changed.

The IRS may think that you were already issued the third stimulus payment.

At your IRS online account, you can find whether a payment was issued to you that you did not receive. You can also find this information on your tax transcript.

If you need to trace a payment that the IRS says has been issued to you, mail or fax a completed IRS Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.

The qualifications for the third stimulus payment are:

you were a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2021,
you were not a dependent of another taxpayer’s 2020 tax return, and
you have a Social Security number.

There are income limitations are if your adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than:

$150,000 if married and filing a joint return or filing as a qualifying widow or widower
$112,500 if filing as head of household or
$75,000 if filing as a single or as married filing separately.
