If you're e-filing, you only need to mail the IRS a copy of your 8949 (along with Form 8453) if you entered sales section totals for one or more sales categories (instead of each individual sale) and one of the following is true:

The sales category for one or more summaries is something other than box A (short-term covered) or box D (long-term covered), or

The box A or box D summary includes adjustments (typically listed in boxes 1f or 1g on your broker statement)

If you're required to mail in forms 8949 and 8453, do so within three days after the IRS has accepted your e-file. You can put them into an envelope, and the IRS doesn't specifically state whether they should be stapled or not; however, I would do so.

Here's the mailing address:

Form 8453

I've efiled my 2022 federal taxes, but had me print form 8453. Reading this I'm understanding that I need to mail this into to the IRS along with form 8949 (which is checked on the 8453). Is this correct?

Do I just put them loose into an envelope or staple them together?

thanks

Robert

Staple them. Even though your name and social security number are on each form, you want to make it easy to process your return..

Are the details of your sell transactions itemized on your Form 8949 that you e-Filed?

If YES, you don't have to mail the form(s) in on paper.

If the form 8949 you e-Filed says "see attached". it is a summary 8949 not a detail 8949.

IRS requires the details.

If you e-File without the details,

you can mail a paper form 8949 with the details, or some other form with the details that has the information in the same manner as Form 8949. the consolidated 1099-B from your broker, for example, is acceptable.

@rnhardin
