The current online software is ONLY for a 2022 return---no other year. Did you use online and put in 2020 information? If you did that, the return is all wrong. Do not file it. Or....is it too late----did you e-file it? Post back for help if you used online and e-filed it with 2020 income.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2019, 2020 or 2021 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline. If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

Sorry, because of the character limit I couldn't clearly explain. I used Turbo Tax 2020 for my 2020 taxes. I have not mailed them yet. I went to start my 2021 taxes and tried to download the software . There is a page on the site that asks if I want to start my 2021 taxes. I clicked the link and it apparently sent me to the 2022 tax software purchase and download page. I accidentally bought and downloaded the 2022 Turbo Tax program. Because of this I started to question if the name of the tax programs were based on the year it comes out or the tax year since the 2021 tax link sent me to buy Turbo Tax 2022. If that was a mistake I want to exchange the 2022 software for the 2021 tax software. I tried having them call me but I don't have a US phone number for them to call.

you'll need TurboTax 2022 to do your current tax return (2022) unless you already filed that elsewhere.

Or you can ask for a refund.

The current online software cannot be used for a 2021 tax return. Online is ONLY for 2022 returns. Do not use the online program and enter any 2021 information. If you started to do that---clear it out and use the online program later for 2022.

We see people get confused and they keep logging in to online software which will require them to pay at the end. You need to use the desktop software for 2021. One way to tell if you are using the right software---your tool bar. Online software has the toolbar in a black vertical column on the left side of the screen. Desktop software has the tools up on the top of your TT screen.

I did not use any online programs. They should design the site so it doesn't navigate people trying to do taxes for the past years to the 2022 online program. They should also ask in the beginning what year you are trying to do. But none of this is related to my question......

I just want to let them know there is a page that asks if you want to do your 2021 taxes and then it send you to download 2022 software which I accidentally bought. Now I need to exchange or get a refund so I can have 2021 downloadable software.
