You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

 Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

The Form 1040X you need will not be available until late February.

Hi, I'm asking about the statement, "Don't go in and start changing or you will make a mess for yourself." I filed my return electronically last week and it was accepted by the IRS. I am getting a refund, and of course I do not have it yet. Just this weekend I received another 1099 DIV that I had forgotten about. I would like to go in and start my amended return to report this additional income, because I know I'll owe money back to the IRS (in other words, I'll get that original refund but I'll have to give some back) and I want to get that paid before April 15. I at least want to pay it via EFTPS prior to April 15, even if I don't have the refund by then. Why will I make a mess for myself if I go into TurboTax to at least start the amendment now, but not file, so I know the dollar amounts owed? Is TurboTax still communicating behind the scenes regarding status of the return, now that it's been accepted? Can I at least start the process and not electronically file the amendment until I get that refund? Thanks!

That warning is geared toward people who are so impatient to amend that they do not wait for the form 1040X to become available. They go in and start messing up their original returns on their Form 1040. If you are using Form 1040X now, you are okay. I would still advise waiting to send in the 1040X when your original return has been fully processed instead of sending it now.

No...TurboTax does not communicate behind the scenes with the IRS. Once you file your tax return, TT is done. TT gets no information at all from the IRS.

In addition, if your return is still being processed by the IRS, there may be changes implemented during the process that may affect information needed on the amended return.

However, as xmasbaby0 stated, it is okay to go in to start preparing an amended return but hold off submitting until the original return has been processed. You may submit the payment on or before April 15 deadline. It should just sit there as a credit waiting for the amended return. Click HERE for IRS payment instructions.

Once your return has been accepted by the IRS, TurboTax is no longer involved in your tax return processing. Laws set up to protect your privacy will not allow IRS to share any status information about your return.

If you need to add a W-2 to an already filed tax return, you will need to file an amendment. You will have to wait until your Tax Return has been accepted and you have received your refund.

To file an amendment, follow this link: How to Amend my Tax Return

@drethegreat90
