Newlyweds filing jointly but TurboTax DID NOT make it clear that we BOTH needed to upload our W2s onto ONE return. TurboTax accepted my husband’s refund but rejected mine… fair. But he went to amend it and we can’t until Feb. 16th?!? WHY? It was accepted… he should be able to amend it after it’s been accepted and TurboTax has tied our hands and forcing us to wait due to their lack of explaining and not making it clear to newlyweds that they only need to fill out ONE return and make sure you upload any documents for the HOUSEHOLD. The wording through filing jointly was “you” “your” not “household” “you AND your spouse”.

Sorry---it does not work that way. Sorry that you were confused with filing your first joint return but you cannot fix it yet.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

 Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

The Form 1040X you need will not be available until late February.

And....if you set up the return correctly as a joint return....on every income screen there was a spot with each of your names. You have to pay very careful attention to every screen.

be sure your 1040-x is correct when you submit it via e-File.

although IRS says you should get three 1040-x e-files, I think TurboTax only gives you one.

as mentioned you have to wait until TurboTax opens up for 1040-X before making any changes.

Good luck, 1040-x is tedious and confusing if you are not familiar with the process.

e-File 1040-X makes it much easier.

@PNW123

We didn’t change anything. It’s the fact we both attempted to file not realizing we needed to file once and include both of our documents. His was accepted and mine was rejected. So we’re going to amend his and move on. It’s just disappointing that TurboTax didn’t make that clear to the newbies is all.
@xmasbaby0
