Do you have a copy of the 2020 return? And what do you mean by "my tax preparer"? Did you pay someone? Or was it a friend or family member?

If the return was not filed at all, then the only way to file a 2020 return now is by mail. It has to be signed and dated in ink.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

First, confirm that the tax return was not filed.

You can call toll-free at 1-800-829-1040 or contact a Taxpayer Assistance Center Local IRS Office

If it was not filed, you should mail the SIGNED return to the IRS.

Your federal tax return goes to a different location depending on the state that you live in. See this list to determine the location for you.

Where to File Paper Tax Returns (irs.gov)

Unless you have carryover losses, you can go ahead and Efile your 2022 tax return.
