How do I amend my 2021 return?

There are a few things you need to know before you can start the amendment process:

To amend your 2021 return, you need to use the same TurboTax account that you used to file your original 2021 return.
- If you don’t see your 2021 return under Your tax returns & documents on the Tax Home screen, you might be in the wrong account. Use our account recovery tool to find all of your accounts.
Make sure you really need to amend, and that your 2021 return was accepted. You can't amend a return that hasn't been filed yet.
If you don’t need to amend, and instead want to view, print, or download your 2021 return, follow these instructions.
If you used TurboTax Free Edition, you'll need to add PLUS to amend your return.

When you're ready to amend, select your product below and follow the instructions.

TurboTax Online

Sign in to TurboTax
On your Tax Home, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents, select 2021, then Amend (change) your return
Select Amend using TurboTax Online
On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your 2021 amended return, select the reason(s) you're amending and Continue
Answer the questions on the following screens. The Refund Monitor will reset to $0—don’t worry, this is normal for amended tax returns
When you reach Here's the info for your amended federal return, select Start next to the info you need to change
Continue through the screens, making the changes you need to make to amend your return
When you return to the Here’s the info for your amended federal return, select Done
- If you have more changes to make, repeat Steps 6–7
Carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return
You can e-file your amended federal return in TurboTax, but only some states allow you to e-file your amended state return. We’ll walk you through the filing options for your state at the end of the amendment process.

Note: Any changes you make to amend your federal return will automatically be transferred over to your state return. If you’re already amending your federal, you don’t have to make any changes to your state, unless you’re making state-specific changes.

TurboTax CD/Download

Open your TurboTax 2021 software (you must amend your 2021 return in the 2021 version of TurboTax)
Select Amend a filed return, located near the bottom of the homepage
Select the return you wish to amend, then Continue
On the Did you already file your return? screen, select Yes, I've already filed my return and then select I need to amend my 2021 return
Select Continue. Don't worry if your refund changes to $0. This is normal for amended returns.
On the next screen, select Update next to the info you need to change, then follow the onscreen instructions until you reach the screen Do you need to change anything else?
- If you need to make more changes, repeat Step 6. When you’re done making changes, select Done
Carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return
Don’t forget to select Save As (Mac: select Duplicate) from the File menu when you save a copy of your amended return. This will preserve the tax return you originally filed
- Name the copy you're saving so that you can distinguish it from the original, for example as 2021_amended_tax_return_Smith
You can e-file your amended federal return in TurboTax, but only some states allow you to e-file your amended state return. We’ll walk you through the filing options for your state at the end of the amendment process.

If you want to track the status of your amended return, use the IRS Where's My Amended Return? tracking tool. Allow at least 16 weeks for the IRS to process your amended return.

Processing times for amended state returns vary from state to state. If it's been more than 12 weeks since you filed your amended state return and you haven't heard anything, we suggest you contact your state tax agency.
