Help! I filed in the wrong state.

I live in Indiana but I mistakenly filed taxes in Kentucky (where I work). Now Kentucky wants a huge amount of money from me since they were not the state taking state taxes out of my check. Indiana was. How do I fix this? Amended return? What do I do?

@Sharkman907 - it's not a mistake to file in KY - that is where you work. Did you file as a non-resident?

did you file Indiana taxes? what should occur is that Indiana will calculate your Indiana taxes (since you live there) and then give you a credit for what you paid Kentucky, so that you are not paying taxes on the same dollar in both states. So there should be a large refund due to you from Indiana.

Since IN & KY have a reciprocal agreement you should have ONLY filed an IN return and the employer should only withhold IN taxes. File an amended non resident return to KY (if you have already filed one) and indicate NONE of the income belongs to KY to zero out the taxes owed.
