topic Rejected Tax Returns in After you file

My tax returns got rejected because of a mistake I made. I claimed my son as a dependent on my return, but I forgot to check the box on his return that said someone can claim him as a dependent. I amended his federal return with e-file and they debited the money that I owed within a couple of days. After that I re-filed my taxes, but they were rejected again. I was wondering how long I should wait before I e-file again. I assumed that since they already debited the money from my account that it would be okay.

You will not be able to e-file your return at all this year. Even if you amended your son's return, his SSN is in the system in a way that will not be corrected for many months. Your own return claiming him as a dependent will have to be filed by mail.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
