Who was not allowed to use their Social Security number on your tax return? Has your return been electronically filed, accepted by the IRS and refund changed? Please clarify.

If your return has been transmitted and rejected by the IRS, you can correct your tax return and re-transmit.

If your return has been transmitted and accepted by the IRS, you should not attempt to amend until the IRS has processed your tax return.

Your dependent must be a qualifying child to qualify for the child tax credit.

For tax year 2021, a qualifying child is an individual who does not turn 18 before January 1, 2022, and who satisfies the following conditions:

The individual is the taxpayer’s son, daughter, stepchild, eligible foster child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, half-sister, or a descendant of any of them (for example, a grandchild, niece, or nephew).

The individual does not provide more than one-half of his or her own support during 2021.

The individual lives with the taxpayer for more than one-half of tax year 2021.

The individual is properly claimed as the taxpayer’s dependent.

The individual does not file a joint return with the individual’s spouse for tax year 2021 or files it only to claim a refund of withheld income tax or estimated tax paid.

The individual was a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien.

The qualifications for the third stimulus payment are:

you were not a dependent of another taxpayer’s 2020 tax return, and

Your 2021 Federal tax return has been filed and accepted by the IRS. Your refund has been deposited but the IRS has changed the amount of the refund.

The IRS will be sending you a communication explaining what they did to change your refund.

After receiving the communication, you may be able to amend your 2021 Federal tax return and receive an additional refund amount.
