topic E-file Will Not And Can Not Work for me. How Do I get my $25 back from Intuit? in After you file

I paid $25 to Intuit to e-file my state tax return, at the same time I e-filed my Federal return.

I subsequently received a message saying my federal and state returns were both rejected.

Upon checking, it was because my 2020 AGI did not match that which the IRS had on record. I went to the IRS to get a return transcript, only to find that my 2020 Federal return has not been processed yet. Therefore, there is no AGI on record; there is no number to match.

I subsequently mailed my returns.

Now, having paid $25 to e-file, and the e-file being unsuccessful, how do I get the $25 that Intuit charged for state e-filing back from Intuit?

First----try using zero as the AGI ---often using zero will let you e-file.

You could have entered a 0 (zero) for the 2020 AGI and e-filed the 2021 tax return since the IRS does not have a 2020 AGI in their database for you.

You will need to contact TurboTax support for the state e-file charge. Use the key words Billing Issue

See this TurboTax support FAQ for contacting support - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number/00/25632

The instructions from Turbotax are not particularly clear upon the subject of entering zero if your 2020 return has not been processed. To quote:

"If you’re still waiting for your 2020 tax return to be processed, enter $0 for your prior year’s adjusted gross income (AGI) on your 2021 tax return. You’ll need to provide your AGI to e-file your 2021 tax return."

It says enter zero, but note that it does not say enter zero to e-file. It says to e-file, "You’ll need to provide your AGI to e-file your 2021 tax return."

1. It says provide your AGI, not a zero AGI.

2. Nothing is wrong with saying "If you’re still waiting for your 2020 tax return to be processed, entering $0 for your prior year’s adjusted gross income (AGI) will allow you to e-file your 2021 tax return," making it clearer and more concise in one fell swoop.
