Cannot amend 2020 return because I used Turbo Tax IRS Free File

I understand that Turbo Tax no longer supports IRS Free File, why am I not given the option to pay Turbo Tax to amend my 2020 return?

What option do you have to access your 2020 return if you used IRS FreeFile? If you can access the .tax file, you should be able to get 2020 TurboTax Deluxe or Basic and import the return and then amend.

If you used TurboTax Online Free to do your 2021 tax return, you might be able to access your 2020 return from the IRS. If not, you can always request a transcript from the IRS.

I login to TurboTax.com, scroll down to "You tax returns & documents". Next to 2020 I click the drop down for "Amend (change) 2020 return" and it says "Amending a prior year return is not currently supported by IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax".

I do see the .tax file is available for download. So I need to download that and download 2020 TurboTax Deluxe standalone software?

iglnicholas, I have the same question as I am trying to amend my 2020 return this year, but I used the IRS Free File program. Do you mind giving an update on how you accomplished this? Did you use the .tax file method, did you call support, etc.?

You are commenting on an older thread that may have outdated information. For this type of filing, you can use the free forms provided by the IRS at the link here. Or, you can purchase the prior year's software here to Amend.
