topic Do I have to wait until after my scheduled payment time-file a 1040X? in After you file

Hello, I have both federal and state local tax payments scheduled for April 1. I discovered I accidentally put I did not receive an HSA distribution when I did (for qualified medical expenses, will not owe more money). Once the PA40-X becomes available on TurboTax (hoping today) I can file my amendments. I called a TurboTax specialist (Eric, 30 years as a CPA) and he said I did not have to wait to make my amendment until after my scheduled payments. However, I see people in the discussions saying otherwise. Can someone please confirm? I just want to file my amendment and move on with my life. I’m really worried about the consequences of not correcting this error.

Not to worry. Provided you used 100% of the HSA for medical reasons it will not make any difference on your tax return.

Because you owe money, you will not be delaying a refund. You can file the amended return, but when the question is asked, "did you make the payment for your taxes", you will have to say no.

On the other hand, because there is no change to the taxes, you can do nothing. At worst, the IRS would send you a letter requesting the HSA statement, and a statement that you did use it all for medical reasons.

Finally, there is no rush to file the amended return. You have 3 years from April 15th, 2022 to file it.
