The IRS (& State) use the address on your tax return to send a letter if they need any additional information or to let you know about any changes that were made. Also, the address is used to mail a refund check if that is the option you choose to receive your refund.

To change your address with the IRS, you may complete a Form 8822, Change of Address (For Individual, Gift, Estate, or Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax Returns)

If you've already submitted your tax return with a wrong address, it's too late to edit that information. You will now have to wait until the IRS either accepts or rejects your tax return. If your return has been accepted, you will have to amend your return to change the address. If you moved after filing your tax return, you can see the information here for instructions on how to fill out a change of address form.
