You cannot combine income from 2016 and 2017 on the same tax return, nor can you use the current online software to file a 2016 return. The online software can only be used for a 2017 tax return. If you need to file for 2016 you have to purchase the 2016 software that you install to your computer. A 2016 return can only be printed, signed,and mailed. It cannot be e-filed.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2016 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

Only a 2017 return can be prepared online and e-filed.

If you need to prepare a return for 2014, 2015, or 2016 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)
