So I owe state 90 dollars. Turbotax said they took that out of my refund and my remaining refund amount would be 85 dollars. Well the state just took that too! I get on federal website and they say my refund was approved however a portion of it will be taken for an offset. I do not have, child support or any loans. So how can state take my refund plus turbotax stated they automatically took it out (my original state amount was like 190) and now federal is taking it out too! Doesn't make any sense?

Sorry---you misunderstood. TurboTax never knows anything at all about offsets to your refund for child support or back taxes. The only thing that can be deducted from a federal refund is your TurboTax fees.

If you owe the state you have to pay the state yourself. The state cannot be paid from a federal refund.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment. For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1900884-what-are-my-options-for-getting-my-state-refund-or-for-paying-any-state-taxes-i-owe

Sorry the federal must be reduced for something else. You misunderstood. The state tax can not be deducted from the federal refund. Never. You can only have the Turbo Tax fees deducted. You will still get the full federal refund minus any fees you had deducted plus the extra 39.99 Refund Processing Service charge (44.99 in California).

Turbo Tax just shows you a screen at the end showing the Net amount of federal and state combined. But it is just for your own info. You do still have to pay the state yourself separately. See,

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/state-taxes/help/can-i-pay-my-state-taxes-from-my-federal-refund/00/26288

Check the printout or PDF of your return; look for the state cover sheet with the Turbotax logo. If you owed tax, it will show the payment information and how/when you decided to pay. Read the state payment instructions carefully since most states cannot be paid from within the TT system and requires additional steps.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/refunds/help/what-are-my-options-for-getting-my-state-refund-or-for-paying-any-state-taxes-i-owe/00/25954

Sorry you must be mistaken. I screen shot every process. Turbo tax 100 percent said you owe the state of Indiana. So yes turbo tax knew. it also says right on the irs where's my refund website under my refund approved bar that it has been partially reduced to pay child support, student loans, or STATE or federal INCOME TAX. so obviously they can! Seriously don't state false information.

Turbo Tax would never know if you still owe for a prior year. Each year is completely separate. It might be referring to 2020 for something else.

If the IRS or state said you owe then that is with them. It isn't for the current year. Turbo Tax doesn't know if the IRS or state will adjust your refund.

So the IRS said you owe a prior year state tax? Then you have to ask the state why you owed it and what year. Maybe you were suppose to send a check for a state tax due? Or they couldn't debit your bank account.

TurboTax cannot take money from your federal refund and send it to your state for you. This is prohibited by law. However, there is a summary screen that shows you what your "net refund" will be after you receive one refund and pay another balance due. This is just information to sort of sum up your overall refund. However, you must still make independent arrangements to pay your state balance due - TurboTax cannot pay your Indiana taxes for you out of your federal refund.

You can find out more about your federal refund offset by calling this automated number 800-304-3107. TurboTax does not receive information about your offsets or any other communication from the IRS once your return is accepted.

No, my question is that the state put the offset into play and they only took a small portion of the refund ($262)

and I want to know when will I receive the balance of the refund?

If you have a large refund coming and it is causing a financial hardship, the Taxpayer Advocate office might help you.

Note it will still take them a long time to do anything for you.

Otherwise, just wait like the rest of us.
