Wrong Social Security Number

After I e-filed my tax return I reviewed a printout of my return and realized I entered one digit in my social security number incorrectly. What steps do I need to take to resolve this?

Good news, the f-file was quickly rejected by both federal and state so I can make the correction and re-submit.

Did the IRS reject your return? Did you receive any rejection code?

The IRS did reject my return within 24 hours and I was able to make my correction and resubmit. I don't remember getting a rejection code.

My return has been rejected multiple times saying my daughters social doesn’t match what the IRS has. Everything is correct on my end. What do I do?

I tried to obtain a dependent's social security number from my former spouse without success. I went back to insurance documents and obtained the social security number from there. However, it was transcribed incorrectly. I used this in my return and after a few rejections, TurboTax accepted the return and indicated it was to be processed manually. After a few days, I was able to obtain the correct social security number. How do I now input the new number. TurboTax does not allow me to re-file.

If the Social Security number was incorrect, you can file an amended return to make the correction. If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.

You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected.
You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment
