Did you click that big orange button that said “Transmit my return now?” If you did that, you cannot do anything to fix it yet. You have to wait for the email that tells you if your return was accepted or rejected.

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

No, If the IRS denies your Earned Income Credit, you will not have to amend your return. The IRS will make the adjustment and notify you about the result.

If the IRS denied or reduced your EITC for a tax year after 1996 for any reason other than a math or clerical error, you must include Form 8862, Information to Claim Certain Credits After Disallowance with your next tax return.

This means if you are denied, you will have to include form 8862 with your 2022 tax return to claim it again.

What to Do if the IRS Denies Your Claim for a Credit

No, the IRS has a record of the payments they sent out for the advance child tax credit (ACTC) and if you have your child on your return, then they will automatically calculate any additional amount you should have. Do nothing at this time.

If you do need to amend your return, for either the child tax credit (CTC) or the earned income credit (EIC) you must wait until your original return is fully processed. The amended return will not be available until March 17m, 2022, and will be eligible for e-file.

A transaction code 420 means that the return was pulled for a potential audit. The return will then be reviewed and may or may not necessarily be assigned for audit (in person or through correspondence.)

All you can do is wait ... they will either process the return OR you will get a letter to respond to.

@Jeomarroquin The IRS may apply the child tax credit automatically to your return. But in any case, you should wait until you receive your refund before you amend a return, since you need to know how they adjust it to do the amended return properly.
