I amended my NJ 2020 tax form. I owed a small amount. However, I was sent estimated payment vouchers for Payments 2, 3, and 4 which were less than what I previously paid. Does this mean I get a refund or do I actually pay the amounts listed in addition to what I have previously paid. If I do get a refund, how will I receive it? Thank you in advance.

New Jersey will credit you with the amounts you actually sent in (and this is what you want to enter in TurboTax). You will have to complete the 2021 tax return to see if you get any refund.

When NJ sends you ES vouchers, they are blanks.

If you got vouchers with amount entered, that may be some new behavior by NJ.

That would be surprising.

OR

You are looking at TurboTax vouchers, which is completely different.

Estimated payment vouches for the NEXT tax year are automatically produced by the TT program when you have a balance due on the current return. So if you had a balance due on the 2020 NJ return you should have have paid the balance due with the amended return. The estimated payment forms were to be used to make sure this didn't happen again on the 2021 return and were optional to use not mandatory. Any payments you made using those vouchers were applied to the 2021 return that you are preparing now and they should be entered as such on the 2021 return.

Just ignore them. They would be for 2021 estimated payments and it's too late to use or pay them. Do they say 2021 in the upper right?

And If you have a tax due, do not send the 1040V. Just include a check with the 1040X. Ignore the 1040V. That is for the original return or what the original return would have been if it didn’t need correcting. Don’t pay the amount on the 1040V. Pay the amount on the actual 1040X.

Whew! Thanks for your reply. I did not send a ES payment for my 2020 NJ Amended return. However, I did send ES payments for my Federal return. How do I get them back if I overpaid?
Thank you in advance.

When did you send in the 1040ES estimated payment? It probably would have been for 2021. Yes you need to enter it on your 2021 return to get credit for it.

To enter Federal or State Estimated Taxes Paid, including a state estimated payment made in January for the prior year, go to

Federal on left or at top. Personal (Home & Business)

Deductions and Credits at top

Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Estimated - click the Start or Update button
