topic What should I do now that I just received my 1042-S weeks after I filed my tax return? in After you file

I totally forgot about 1042-S before I received it. It's my first time using turbotax. I am on F1 and have been in the US since 2013 march (in an out but the earliest date on F1 is then). Do I now file an amendment? If so, what files should I include and do I file amendments for both the state and the federal?

Thank you so very much for answering...

Yes, most likely you need to file an amendment. However...

Yes, most likely you need to file an amendment. However, please wait first until your return is either rejected or approved and also wait until you have received your refund or your payment has cleared.

If it's rejected, you can return to the program to
add the 1042-S while fixing the error.

If your return is approved, you would need to
amend if adding the 1042-S information changes your original refund amount or tax
due. To amend, please click here 2018 Amend. Follow the instructions in the program
and it will tell you if it will make a change.

To amend, you will need to submit by mail a Form 1040-X with any additional tax forms where your 1042-S triggers. Make sure to attach the 1042-s to the tax forms as well. If the new information creates a difference in the total refund or tax due, you will need to amend both federal and state tax returns.

Do you need to amend if adding the 1042-S information DOES NOT changes your original refund amount or tax due? This is the case for me since box1 on W2 already included this information.

No, do not amend your return. Since the income that is already reported on the W2 form. See Returns Required | Internal Revenue Service for more information.

Sorry I think I haven't made myself clear. The amount on 1042-S (which is exempt from federal tax) is not included in Box 1 (federal income), but is included in Box 16 (State Income). Thus the box 1 is the correct amount of income that is subjugated to federal tax (thus filing an amendment does not change the tax amount due/refund amount), since it doesnt include the income on 1042-S. In this case do I need to file an amendment?
