Hi

I need to amend for 2020 which I owed around $232.

I will send it via mail. I am thinking to send the check together with 1040x. So, when they cash my check, I can see they receive my amendment. But IRS instruction recommends "pay online". Is pay online method better? Why?

It will probably take at least four months before your mailed amendment is opened and the check is cashed. With online the payment will go through on the date you select.

To be sure that your amendment is received, mail it using a postal service that provides you a receipt when the envelope is delivered.

Yes, I will use certified mail. Should I add the return receipt?

Either payment method, should I add some $ as interest? Or, is it better IRS to calculate it?

I would add the return receipt. Do not add interest. The IRS will calculate that and notify you of any that is due.

A mailed check with your form is perfectly acceptable.

TurboTax should give you a voucher to include with your check.

In any case write "tax year 20YY 1040-X" and your SSN on your check.

Note: a 1040-X is always filled out ignoring penalties or interest received or imposed.

If you have a tax due, do not send the 1040V. Just include a check with the 1040X. Ignore the 1040V. That is for the original return or what the original return would have been if it didn’t need correcting. Don’t pay the amount on the 1040V. Pay the amount on the actual 1040X.

Hi,

Now, I am thinking to pay online (direct pay). Since the amendment procedure is very slow, I may receive CP2000 earlier than IRS cash my check. Do you think direct pay is bad idea?

Anyway, it is 1st time for me to use direct pay. So, I may need to look for how to do it.

There is nothing wrong with paying the taxes owed using the IRS payment website and Direct Pay. It quick, easy and you get a confirmation of payment from the IRS. Just make sure that you indicate the payment is for an amended return, Form 1040-X, and the tax year being paid.

The payment is completed on the day you select to have the taxes paid from your bank account. The IRS will give you a confirmation number when you complete payment information on the IRS website.

IRS payment website - https://www.irs.gov/payments/direct-pay

Hi All,

Thank you for teaching me a lot. I could log in my spouse's IRS account which is primarily filer. Once direct pay is completed, I can see the deposit here, correct?

I will try to do direct pay. If it works, I will send 1040x by mail. If it does not works, I will send 1040x with check.

The e-File period for 2020 is ending or already ended and only works if you already did e-File your original 1040 using TurboTax..

Hi,

I saw the latest transcript for 2020. I found two code.

670 payment 10-25-2021 $232

570 additional account action pending 11-15-2021 $0

Does it mean I paid direct pay for the amendment correctly? Does it mean they only hold the payment until 11/15? I do not want they return the payment before they proceed the amendment.

FYI, I checked how I paid again, it showed "amended" for 2020. So, I paid correctly.

You have to wait.

It can take 10 days or more just for the Post Office to get your forms to the IRS.

Then the forms have to be entered by the IRS.

Since you are paying, there is nothing more to do so you should forget about it and get ready for next tax year.

IRS will contact you if there is any issue.

Hi,

Noted. I confirmed it was delivered to IRS PO box. I hope they open my envelop and register it to their system before they return the payment. But, considering the current backlog, I feel hopeless... Anyway, I can not do anything now. If they return the payment to me, I will consider next action at that time.
